what is the difference between Nitrile Gloves and Vinyl Gloves

What is the difference between Nitrile Gloves and Vinyl gloves?

The most popular types of disposable gloves are nitrile disposable gloves and vinyl disposable gloves.  Each type of glove has unique properties which make them suitable for the type of task or job the wearer is undertaking. Here at Omnimedical, our clients ask us; what is the difference between nitrile gloves and vinyl gloves?  We have provided a useful guide below on their differences.

Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile tends to be more durable than vinyl and can often be thought of as more expensive.  However, nitrile gloves are less likely to break than vinyl gloves so in the long term they are more cost-effective and produce less wastage in the environment.  You can store nitrile gloves longer than vinyl gloves due to their longer shelf life.

We refer to nitrile gloves as medical grade or examination gloves.  To be classed as medical grade or examination they need to meet EN455 certification.  The EN455 certification means that the gloves have a high level of resistance to biohazards, such as blood and infectious materials as well as solvents and chemicals.

Due to their strength, nitrile gloves are more puncture resistant than vinyl gloves.  They also mould and fit the hand better than vinyl gloves.  Poorly fitting gloves can lead to a reduction in dexterity and grip strength.

Vinyl Gloves

Whilst vinyl gloves are more cost-effective in the short term.  Vinyl gloves offer a wide range of protection again a range of household chemicals and industrial hazards.  Vinyl gloves are less durable, and they can break easily.  This can be costly as they have to be replaced quicker than nitrile gloves.

Vinyl gloves have a looser fit, so are ideal when completing shorter low-risk tasks, such as cleaning or household DIY.  Therefore, where a looser fit and durability and protection are not a concern then vinyl gloves may be a better option.

In summary, if you require a medical grade or examination glove then that conforms to EN455 regulations then nitrile gloves will be the best option.  If you are conscious of the cost-effectiveness and environmental impact, then nitrile gloves are going to be the best option. However, if you require a general-purpose less tight-fitting glove for less high-risk tasks then vinyl gloves may be suitable.
